Go to Network and Sharing Center and there is a series of seven radio button at the bottom of the page.  The second one turns on/off File Sharing.

Heh, I meant that I'm running Vista and therefore have no means to figure this out myself, as it's a problem on XP, hence, why this is in the XP forum. I'm sorry that wasn't made clear.

That was a question, statement , or manifesto?

Well, overall, it's still a question of how to re-enable XP's ability to discover and access network shares.

If XP has a Network and Sharing center, this is news to me...

Okay, my bad.  You kept mentioning Vista and I got fixated on that.  Unless you know the exact service the app is shutting down you will have to go thry Group Policy and see what has been Enabled.

Why would they want to turn off discovery of Netwrok Sahres?  If you do have the proper credentials to access the share who would care if you could see it or not?
Any good SYSAMDIN would make that a hidden Share to begin with.

I'll look into that.

The reason they turn that off is so that people who leave folders shared don't have anything happen to their boxen. Because even if they're pw protected, script kiddies can do wonders...

No share is password protected.  Shares and Permissions are controlled by Rights and unless you have rights in Active Directory, there is very little chnace of changing that.

The hackers need to be either hired or kicked out of school.
