Re-installing Windows XP due to virus
Hi, everyone.
About a week ago my Dimension 4700 contracted a virus called trojan.vundo. Norton Antivirus caught it and linked me to symantec.com to remove the virus. No luck. My computer says the virus does not exist or cannot be found or something. The thing is, to run the symantec software, I was instructed to turn off my Windows XP System Restore, something I was not very knowlegable about. Later I decided to do a System Restore to go back to a day before the virus took hold, I found that it would only go back as far as when I turned the XP System Restore back on (two days ago).
My question is: since I cannot chronologically reset the operating system back far enough to do a system restore, do I need to reload XP to overcome this virus? I do not recall receiving an XP disc with my Dell shipment and therefore do not have a restore disc. I understand that I can download XP from the Dell website, but am not sure what to select - DSS?
Thank you for your help.

Disable "system Restore".
Reboot in "safe mode".
Run "norton Anti-virus"
When Norton is finished and shows the virus name, high light it, tell Norton to "Quarantine" it.
Go to "quarantined Items" and delete it from there.
Don't forget to "enable" restore after rebooting in "normal mode".
