Re-Installing Windows XP Home Edition

I have the Dell Dimension 4550,  There seems to be some glitches in the system that has convinced me that it is time to start from scratch and re-install windows.

I do not have a start up disk or a boot disk, however, I do have my original copy of windows xp program with my serial number.  I also have a separate disk for the drivers and apps.

Anyway, the question is, How do I Re-Install Windows.  And begin with a new slate.

ToyUser,

Once you've backed up anything on the computer now that you want to keep (burn to CD, write to zip disk, transfer to another computer over network, whatever), just put in the Windows XP CD and reboot the computer.  Hit any key when it says to do so and follow the prompts.

Thanks for the advice and suggestions.  I have one more question?

How important is it to download and install SP2.  Service Pack 2 for windows.

I downloaded it before and had some problems so I removed it.  Should I try again?

ToyUser,

It's my opinion that SP2 should be installed on your machine.  Of course, everyone has different opinions on things regarding computers so you'll get different answers from different people.

The best advice I can give here is that if your system is working the way you want it to without SP2 then don't bother.  :smileyhappy:

ToyUser,

Since it is a Critical Update, SP2 should be installed, as should all Critical Updates. If you have reinstalled Windows and have a clean system (no viruses, no spyware) the update should install without difficulty and should cause no problems after installation.
