Re: registry errors

I'm running XP on my PC.  When I reboot, I get messages showing errors.  It's always 5 boxes (or squares) stating that windows can not find them.   I can't locate them in the registry.  I did however find them listed under startup when I went to MSCONFIG.  They have a check box in them beside both of them it says HKCU\software\microsoft\windowsnt\current.   Is it safe to simply uncheck these entries and reboot again?  Thanks

Alegator49,
You solved the immediate problem, but here's a way to find out where those registry entries originated and then maybe clean them up. They likely were left over from software that was removed from the system. You need spybot search & destroy (free) to do this.

First, open msconfig and recheck the item(s) you cleared.
Exit msconfig and reboot.
Launch spybot
Click Tools in lower left corner to expand the list
Click System Startup on that list
Look in right pane under "Value" for any item(s) with blank "Command Line" to it's right. "Value" tells you where the item originated. Some Values may be a little cryptic, but most are obvious. Those are the problems.

To confirm this, with spybot still open, run msconfig in a new window and uncheck one of these items. When you look back at the spybot window, that item should have disappeared from the list of Startup items.

If you decide to clean your registry, make sure you manually set a system restore point first and to be safe, use Regedit's Export function to export any items before you delete them, so they can be imported back into the registry if something unexpected happens. I'd delete one at a time, (with the others unchecked in msconfig) and then run the system for a while to be sure there are no problems before deleting another one. And be sure to set a restore point each time.

I take no responsibility for your actions. ;)
