I did exactly as you said but did not see an option to "close" the CD.  I thought maybe that might be the problem but did not see that option anywhere.  Anyway, even though I did burn a data CD on a CD-R, my XP machine will not recognize that there is a disk in the drive.  Other disks work fine, so...

You could try a different brand of CD. My laptop won't read Memorex or TDK but it reads Sony and Radio Shack fine.

If you are using a UDF program to burn the CD (e.g. Adaptec/Roxio Direct CD), and/or an RW disc, burn the data to a CD-R using the "Data CD" portion of the program.  That should allow it to be read on any CD drive.

The UDF program (old Adaptec program) had an option to finalize the CD so it could be read on any drive and if that wasn't selected it could also be the reason why.  Bur, as mentioned burn a CD-R using the make a Data CD (or whatever the program you have says) and it should be OK.

Does the PC that the disc was burned on recognize it and can you browse the data on the CD?

Yes, the PC that it was burned on recognizes it and I am able to browse the data on the CD.  But the laptop does not recognize it at all...

Hmmm.... interesting...  I've tried Memorex CD-RW, TDK CD-R, and Maxell CD-R.  My laptop won't recognize any of them after I put the files on them from the desktop....

Shouldn't make any difference.

I am wondering if the types of drives makes a difference.  The drive in my notebook is a CD RW drive.  In the users manual for my HP CD Writer (the drive I made the disk on), it says that if I used the HP MyCD program to create the disk (which I did), it should be able to be read by any CD-ROM drive and most CD-R drives.  Any thoughts on this???

well, just sitting here trying different things, I managed to get it recorded and read on the laptop.  :smileyhappy:  I started all over again with a Maxell CD-R and instead of using MyHP, I formated the disk using Adaptec and then dragged the folder from the hard drive to the CD drive using Explorer.  When I went to eject the disk, it asked me if I wanted to "organize" the disk so it could be read by other OS's, I said yes.  (I almost didn't because it didn't mention XP but I took a chance thinking maybe it wasn't mentioned only because XP did not exist when that manual was written).  Lo and behold!  It worked! :smileyvery-happy:  Thank you for all of your help!!!!
