Hi:

Movies recorded with MCE can be found in your C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Recorded TV folder, in the *.dvr-ms format.

If you right click on any movie file in that folder, and in the context menu that opens point to 'Open with..' then click on  "Choose program' you can browse to the DVD burning/editing program you have and see if it will do what you wish. I haven't tried burning any dvr-ms files yet, but there is some good info on how to do that here: http://www.fstop-blues.com/2005/04/windows-media-center-tip-burn-dvr-ms.html

Glad that was some help. Sorry, I'm no expert on burning DVD's, but sooner or later someone will step in here and answer your questions. All I know is what you want to do is possible, though you *might* need to purchase software for the editing part. It looks like there are lots of programs out there for that- maybe some are free.

Yes you can, but it will result in a huge file.

I just started playing with MCE on my Dell 510E, and wanted to burn a recorded TV show to a DVD.

It urns out the easiest thing to do is to burn the DVD right from MCE. You select the recorded TV show, right-click on the recording to want to burn (That's if my memory is working, I just did it for the first time yesterday), and from there it will allow you to burn it as a video DVD.

I also got curious about the actual files MCE creates, as it uses a file with an extension of DVR-MS.

From what I rtead, it's a Microsoft variation of a Mpeg with some additional data included.

I did a search on Google for DVR-MS and one of the first hits had a link to a program called Digital Media Converter.

http://www.deskshare.com/Resources/articles/dmc_DVRMS.aspx

I just tried it last night, to convert a 1-hour TV show.

The original file was about 3gig, and I decided to convert it to an AVI file just to see what happens.

It took a looong time, but then the software warns you ahead of time that because the DVR-MS format is highly compressed, it'll take a long time to convert.

I don't know how long it took, but after about 4 hours on a 3.2Ghz system with 2gig ram, it was 75% done in phase 1.

I went to bed. Let it finish on it's own.

Thi smorning it was done of course, and I brought up Windows Explorer to see how big the .AVI turned out to be.

A bit larger than 83gig! Holy Cow Batman!

I talked with our photographer here at work , and he confirmed that converting a video file to AVI is going to result in a much larger file.

Hmmm.

Just for giggles, I'l try converting it to other file formats to see how big of a file it creates.

I'll probbaly just keep on using MCE itself to burn the shows to a video DVD.

Now will it keep the commercials in it or can you take them out?

If you just use MCE to burn the shows to a video DVD, it will include everything that was recorded as it was recorded, commercials and all.

To eliminate the comercials, you'll need to use some sort of editor.
