Recover Win98 product key

A friend is bringing me a Win98Se system (XPS T700r) and wants to have Win98 clean installed. Don't know if he still has the 'getting started\Win98' booklet that has the product code listed. Is there a way to recover the product code from the system before I reformat the HDD?

There are a couple of methods suggested here: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/Win98/Q_20639767.html

Easiest way I know of is to install and run the Belarc Advisor, which should supply you with a number of product keys for installed applications, including that for Windows 98.

Thanks Flooby. I expect one of those will help me out.

This OS keyfinder works quite well and worth saving for future use:

Hi,

If your lucky, depending upon how the system was originaly set up, you might just find the product key by right-clicking on My Computer and then on Properties.  It may be listed under "Registered to:".  This information is stored in the following registry key...

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion]

"ProductKey"

There are various software applications that also reveal this informtion, but one of the above suggestions should suffice.
