recovery console...

Is it possible to install the recovery console on windows xp media center edition 2005? I've discovered a trojan that has proved to be a menace that I cannot seem to removed, while windows is running and I don't have a bootable cd to go to command prompt. and i cannot boot to safe mode (big ugly blue screen). Any ideas?

Try posting a log in the HijackThis forum here.  The experts there will be able to help you remove the trojan.

Read the red link at the top and then post your log on the forum with a description of your problem, plus the Model of Dell you have and the OS Version.

turns out that had i read a few more posts I wouldn't have had to post this question. I was able to install the recovery console with little or no trouble. and it actually started me on path to trojan enlightenment.

I removed the drive from the computer, hooked it to an external usb connector and have been running anti-virus/anti-spyware program on it.

we've entered the 5th hour. appears to be doing the job. only time will tell as to whether its effective or not.

what I did find was what I suspected.

the following files have been identified as problems and removed/quarantined:

  • hldrrr.exe - in C:\windows\system32\drivers
  • srosa.sys - in c:\windows\system32\drivers
  • Wintems.exe in c:\windows\system32
  • mdelk.exe - in C:\windows
  • and literally thousands of numbered .exe files in C:\windows\system32\drivers\down (a hidden folder).
also found a couple of mangled registry keys related (as in mule_st_key).

I'll download the hijackthis and do the rest as soon as the scan completes and I can put the drive back in the computer.
