Registry configuration error
I have a dell dimension 4100 with windows ME. ( I know this is a Windows 2000 site - but did not find anything for windows ME).
It says to perform a scan disc in safe mode. It takes for ever for safe mode to come up and then it says there is a problem with the drive.
What are my options from here? I thought of using the diagnostic CD - but I don't know how to change the settings so that the CD gets read first.
Thank you.

You'll have to change the boot order sequence in the computers BIOS (system setup) to set the cd-rom to be first.
Here's the link to entering the system setup program and what you will see:

I have tried both the delete key and the F12 key, but nothing happens., What does happen is the Microsoft AWindows Millenium StartUP Menus appears with the following choice:
1. Normal (get the error about the registry configuration
2. Logged (\BOOTLOG.TXT) haven't tried this
3. Safe Mode (doesn't work)
4. SAtep-by-step confimration (I haven't tried this)
Any ideas where to go from here? Thank you.

OK. I got into SetUp and changed the CDROM to 1st. I get the DOS prompt & type in delldiag.
The Dell Diagnostics Menu appears & gives me 2 choices
[1] Dell Dimension 32-Bit Diagnostics
2] Exit
I type in 1 and it tells me it is an invalid directory. I get the same results with 2. Any ideas?

I can only refer you back to the Dell Document for running the diagonostic program:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/software/DIAGS/EN/running.htm?c=us&l=en&cs=&s=gen#overview
Here is a section of that text that describes what you must do to run it:
Turn on your printer if one is attached, and make sure it is online. Also, you must create a copy of the Dell Diagnostics on diskette.
The Dell Diagnostics diskette is created from the Dell Resource CD.
Your computer boots from the Dell Diagnostics diskette in drive A., and the Dell Diagnostics automatically loads.
The next section instructs on how to start the diagnostics program:
Starting the Dell DiagnosticsPerform the following steps to start the diagnostics:
When you start the diagnostics, the Dell logo screen appears, followed by a message telling you that the diagnostics is loading.
After the diagnostics loads, the Diagnostics Menu appears. The menu allows you to run all or specific diagnostic tests or to exit to the MS-DOS prompt.
For a quick check of your system, select the Run Quick Tests option. This option runs only the subtests that do not require user interaction and that do not take a long time to run. Dell recommends that you choose this option first to increase the odds of tracing the source of the problem quickly. For a thorough check of your system, select the Run All Tests option. To check a particular area of your system, select the Run Specific Tests option.
To select an option from this menu, highlight the option and press , or press the key that corresponds to the highlighted letter in the option you choose.
