registry problem?
This started with not being able to open a .clp extension. I changed file ext associations and now have the little windows icon next to a .clp - in windows explorer. Double right click won't open it, right click and shift/right click will neither open it nor give me the 'open with" option...Shouldn't that option be there?..Didn't it used to be?
oh- system is windows 98 2ed, Dell dimension, max memory (256), Norton anti virus 2004 (updated religiously),zone alarm personal firewall, and the three adware programs mentioned below-
I suspect one of the possibilities is that in setting up Spybot, Adaware and Evidence Eliminator I may have made one ( or all) of them cut a little too deep and deleted a registry entry.? Is that a dumb assumption? System is operating well. I don't think I'm "infested".
I could restore my registry but I'd have to go all the way back to February to predate possible problem- if that's what it is.
I've installed a bunch of programs since then and, having never restored my registry back to a previous date,I fear that If I restored to a date previous to program installations that I'd lose all their registry entries and screw them all up.
Could I move successively back through registry restore dates to see if the problem goes away? or have I diagnosed it all wrong?
I have written to my registry before but ONLY with very specific directions.
How might I best start to unravel this ? Thanks folks.

The "Open with" entry on the context menu should appear after a left-click to select the file then Shift+right-click. If the *.clp file type is listed on the file types tab reached in Windows Explorer through Tools|Options you can change the association there as well.
Unless you have made changes, your system will retain copies of only the last five registries used to boot the system successfully so going back to February is not an option.

of course the whole thing is listed backwards and I have to click on every dang thing in the list to see if a .clp is a file extension to which any particular program might be applicable - I'm not finding a .clp anywhere in the whole looong list.
next step would be to encounter why it is , given that i have the little windows icon in front of a .clp in windows explorer, still, nothing wants to open the darned thing.
Amazing as it may seem, even when I get the 'open with" choice, and it's a little windows icon - in front of the thing- one would think that maybe IE would open the thing, or something rather regular, but i've been trying everything in my "open with" box and , so far, nothing is working.....
Update- just tried this again and IE worked , but it wanted to dowwnload something , instead of just opening a *.clp that's already on my hard drive.I have no idea what that's about. The .clp I was trying to access is just a notepad entry.
Now- to refer to your last paragraph, about registry restore, and here I;m referring to registry backups made by start/run/type "scanregw"- and i have 5 of those in a file on C drive.
Am I correct in assuming that , were I to employ one of those 5 registry backups that I'd foul up anything I'd installed, that might have made a registry entry - AFTER the date to which i reverted in backing up my registry?...how's that for an awkward sentence? thanks for your help...keep on coming if my follow-up questions make any sense. thanks again.

If the .clp files on your computer are clipboard files (an assumption I made at the outset, which may be incorrect) you can open them with the clipboard viewer. I have been unable to make an association between .clp files and the clpboard viewer so that double-clicking a .clp file opens it. I find I have to open the clipboard viewer ( by double-clicking C:\Windows\Clipbrd.exe or going to Start|Programs|Accessories|System Tools|Clipboard Viewer) and then opening the .cip file from within there.
Restoring to a saved copy of the registry will revert your registry to its state when it was save, which means that any programs installed after that date will no longer be represented in the registry.
