Registry Problems; Windows Update Problem

Ok heres my case. I have recently finished a troubleshooting thing with Dell about some issues i was having with Updating Windows an installing Norton 360 over again. Apparently, we determinded that some registry permissions may be messed up an will need to be fixed. Problem is, because the dell dude said that it would take to long to reset watever keys it was, he said that it was probally best that the OS jus be reinstalled again. Unfortunantly, i have reinstalled 3 times an lost over 300 gigs of data an don't feel like losing anymore...we haven't gotten a external device to back up my data, so until then, a reinstallation is not gonna happen, cause i refuse to have to retrieve my data all over again, so my question is is there anyone out in the Dell Community that could help me fix my registry so i can get things under control with my updating of the computer an stuff. Anything besides telling me to reinstall would be appreciated. I will appreciate any ones help, no matter how experienced you are

You can do a "repair" install of XP and your data will be left intact.

After the repair is done you will have to do a windows updates again, as updates are removed during the repair process, Only use a XPsp2 CD to do the repair.

No way to help you with the registry with the non specific information you provided.

Editing the registry is a very, very precise task.

Hi Nick, I'm not sure if this is your issue, but MS updated the Updater itself and there is a known issue if you do a repair install of Windows - you can't access Windows Updates. I imagine this also applies if you do a reinstall of Windows. Here's an MS technet article with links regarding this problem: http://blogs.technet.com/mu/archive/2007/09/28/issues-installing-updates-after-repairing-xp.aspx Maybe this will help. Sincerely, Libra

If you have just reinstalled XP and if your problem is not being able to install Windows Updates, the solution posted by Libra1 might solve this for you

michaelagilmore, not only have you replied to a topic that is over 3 years old, but as mentioned above, editing the registry is a precise task -- even for an automated scanner.Anyone going to the site that you are pushing may have problems as noted here:

http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/registryeasy.com

In addition, don't support the use of so called "registry cleaners" because they can aggravate a situation and take steps we are many times not manually aware of.

It is better not to resort to such programs if you don't know what is happening with the proposed fix and the registry.
Otherwise, a change to the registry can make a system unbootable by one mistake.

Here are some good discussions:

If you absolutely must use a registry cleaner, always backup the registry first:

Amazing article with a lot of useful information, actually, recently I've found another way to speed up my poor PC, the software "tuneup360". It’s very easy to handle and of course very powerful, my friends and I all use it now, maybe you can have a try.
