STANSTAN,

If you are using a Dell Recovery CD for Windows 98 the procedure for installing the operating system is here. If you are using a retail Windows 98 CD, the command at the D:\> prompt is setup, not startup.

You're right the command is setup.  Still get the message "this program needs microsoft windows".

I tried putting a 98 cdrom in the the other drive and still get the message.

Hi,

Check if the WIn 98 CD you have is an upgrade CD, not a full installation CD. You will get the error message you detail if you try and use the upgrade CD from a DOS prompt.

Download the file to create a full Win 98 First Edition or Second Edition, ensure you have the correct version, from http://www.bootdisk.com. Run the downloaded file to create the bootable floppy disk.

Boot with the floppy disk you have created and ensure you have access to your CD drive.

Put your Win 98 installation CD in the CD drive

At the A:> prompt CD to get to the correct drive letter for your CD drive and type "setup"
