Reinstall IE.
I use WinXP Pro SP2 and IE 6.0.
I am having problems with Hotmail and I'm unable to post questions to MS newsgroups. After much e-mail traffic with 2 different tech support groups at MS, the concensus is: reinstall Internet Explorer. They refer me to a MS site that tells me how to reinstall IE when using WinXP or XP SP1. It does not address XP SP2. It only has instructions from reinstall all of XP SP2.
When I point this out, they refer me to MS newsgroups, which of course, I can't use. They suggest calling but my hearing is very bad and I have trouble understanding someone who is telling me to do some technical procedure which I don't understand.
So I can't fix this via telephone. I can't post a question on a newsgroup. MS will try to help more I want to pay for it.
Can I reinstall only IE (from my reinstallation CD) or must I reinstall all of XP SP2? How?

Consider the previous suggestions. But if you find you need to reinstall IE6.0, check this out:
IEFix Utility ,
or http://www.petri.co.il/reinstall_ie_6_on_xp.htm .
You will need Windows XP with SP2 CD.

I have been trying suggestions from MS tech support for weeks. Pop ups off, lower security settings, Firefox, message after message, week after week after week.

"control panel" -> "add/remove programs" -> "add/remove windows components"
-> uncheck the "internet explorer" -> click "next"
you now uninstall the IE.
To install it again, go to the path above (again) and this time, CHECK the "internet explorer" and click "next" agian. at this time, wizard needs XP cd to continue.
hope this help

But there are situations where they will not let you do it.
And the way MS integrated IE to the OS, you may end up with reinstalling Windows once you uninstalled IE! I have had that happened.

"They have instructions for WinXP and WinXP SP1. but not SP2."
No they have them too, from the MSKB:
Windows XP SP2: Reinstall Windows XP SP2
In other words, reinstall the operating system.

I sucessfully reinstalled IE and it did not solve my problems. So I'll post questions about the specific problems.
Thank you all for your suggestions.

On my PC I found FireFox to be an excellent browser.
I had a friend whose IE got corrupted and could not be fixed, and now he is a FireFox user.

On XP (Home), I found that IE seems to be very much integrated into the OS and on some configurations (Media Center), uninstalling it caused more problems.
We've tried using restore points, and that did not work in fixing IE (rendering problems.)
We finally backed up the computer and performed a partial system restore and got IE working. (And spending 6 hours restoring the account. At this point, I was wishing it was a MAC - as it would have taken only 2 hours to do a complete OS restore, update, and account restoration!)
Then the user uninstalled AOL, reinstalled AOL, and CDROMS do not read anymore! And it was documented that IE (in Media Center) are somehow linked in the registry!
