A Freudian slip I'm sure, but in your post you wrote "Widows Me"!

You hit it on the head!!   "WinMe" is so un-stable, it's not even funny!

You might not have any virus' at all!!

try looking at "98SE, or XP for your OS.

Good luck with "Widows Me"!!

Hi! I'm no expert, but I did manage to re-install ME a few months ago when my hard drive crashed. Let me just verify that you've set the BIOS to default values and formatted the hard drive. I'm not sure you can reload ME without wiping out everything on the hard drive. Getting everything back up and running might be a long process, but I was happy for the opportunity to start over after I had used my Inspiron and Windows ME for a year.

Keep posting, let us know how it goes. There are experts on these boards that jump in when all the basics are ruled out. It also helps to identify a few details about your system, though I presume it's a Dell since that's the board we're on.

When you state that you are tapping the "2" key, I hope you are using the "2" at the top of the keyboard and not the number pad on the right-side of the keyboard.  If your NumLock is not 'on' at bootup,

Try this on the bootup...

  1. When you first see the boot options screen, tap the spacebar on the keyboard (to kill any 'time out' sequence).
  2. Use your up and down arrows to navigate between options.

If this is does not alleviate the problem, then (1) your keyboard is not recognized at bootup (such as may be the case with wireless keyboard), or (2) the Esc key may have been stuck during the boot sequence (and Windows is sort of 'holding its breath' while waiting for the correct key to be struck).

Hope this helps.
