Reinstalling IE 5.5
Introduction
I have a Dell Dimension 4100 with Windows Me, AOL 6.0, Internet Explorer 5.5 (IE5.5 } with no service packs. They were preinstalled by Dell. I use a Time Warner Kansas City Road Runner (TWKCRR) Cable Modem Connection. The connection to TWKCRR is working. I have Internet Security Settings to default; routinely delete cache and temporary Internet Explorer files. I use BitDefender, SuperAntiVirus, Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spyguard, CCleaner, Spybot Search and Destroy, Spyware Blaster, Hijackthis. Sometimes I get an Internet Explorer Script Error. I have questions about reinstalling IE 5.5.
If I try to repair Internet Explorer 5.5 by: clicking on Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs; Install/Uninstall; choosing Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 and Internet Tools; clicking again on Add/Remove; checking Repair Internet Explorer and clicking OK. The response is: "Internet Explorer 5.5 could not be repaired. Please run setup again to reinstall all components." Clicking on details yielded "Internet Explorer 5.5 cannot be repaired due to the following errors. Version 5.0.0.3175 of file SCRRUN.DLL exists but the version needs to be greater than 5.1.0.4615."
Now I have noticed that the file, SCRRUN.DLL, resides in two places: C:\Windows\System and C:\Windows\Drivers\HP930\Disk1 as Version 5.0.0.3715. I have also noticed that I have a file called FIXIE.INF that resides in C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer. When opened, there is a listing of [MSVBScript.VerifyFiles] VBSCRIPT.DLL= 5.5.0.4801- SCRRUN.DLL= 5.1.0.4615-.
Questions
Question 1: Can one temporarily rename the current file, SCRRUN.DLL, Version 5.0.0.3715; download the newer version, SCRRUN.DLL Version 5.1.0.4615 from the Internet; place it in the two folders above; and then perform a successful repair of IE 5.5? Has anybody really tried that? If so, does anyone have a site from which to download?
Question 2: When I click on Add/Remove for IE5.5 and IE Tools, there are the two other options of: Add A Component and Restore Previous Windows Configuration in addition to Repair Internet Explorer. With respect to reinstalling IE 5.5 just what is the procedure? Would clicking "Restore Previous Windows Configuration" be the same as "running setup again to reinstall all components" as mentioned in the second paragraph above. Do all of the necessary files reside in FIXIE.INF?
