Reinstalling Windows XP
I am trying to reinstall Windows XP on my pc. I put the reinstallation cd into the disk drive and restert my pc. I then press f12 and go into options and select boot from IDE Drive and wait for it to restart. It then restarts and loads all the files from the cd until a point where it asks me whether i want to install Windows XP or repair the current one. I select repair by pressing r and it then asks me for the administator password. I myself own the pc and I am the administrator so I put in the password but it keeps telling me it is wrong. after putting it in 3 times it tells me that it must restart because I have entered the password wrong 3 times. I am wondering how I can reinstall windows if this problem keeps ocurring. I am also curious as to why it is not giving me an option to reinstall windows and only to install or repair. when I put the cd into the drive after I have logged on, it tells me that the version on the cd is newer than the one one the hard drive. So I wonder If I have to delete The current version of windows I have and then startup and boot using the cd and install the windows one the cd.

"It then restarts and loads all the files from the cd until a point where it asks me whether i want to install Windows XP or repair the current one. I select repair by pressing r and it then asks me for the administator password." This is the first error. You should simply press as you want to install XP and not repair it.

Second error, the password the repair procedure is looking for is the System Administrator password, not your administrator account password. The default for that is null (blank) but since you are not attempting to repair XP that doesn't matter at this point.

This occurs with a repair if your XP reinstallation CD does not have the same version of XP as the one installed on your computer--which can happen if you installed XP from the CD and then later installed a service pack (SP1 or SP2). You wish to reinstall XP and reinstallation includes formatting the C:\ partition of your hard drive which does delete the version of Windows on the hard drive.
