ok i've had to reinstall my windows earlier this week and then i was just told that i neeed to reconfigure my hard drive. i have an inspiron 8600 and do not have the dell pc system restore option. so when i go to reinstall windows it asks me which partition i want to install it on. what am i supposed to do from there?

I know very little but I just recently had to do the same thing and will again as soon as my new hard drive arrives.

One of your partitions should be a good sizes (GREAT SIZE in my case) smaller than the other.  I was directed by Dell support (from what I could gather from his busted english) to select the bigger partition.

ur2funny,

Why were you told that you had to reconfigure your hard drive? What was wrong after you reinstalled XP?

is this what i have to do?-  go to the install screen, delete partition c, recreate partion c, and select that to install windows on. then use the other dell disks to reinstall everything else?

ur2funny,

Yes, the C:\ partition should include most of your hard disk. There will be two other partitions, the ~35MB partition with Dell diagnostics and the 3-5GB partition withe PC Restore image on it. After XP is installed, install the chipset drivers first followed by the others in any order.
