Reinstalling XP
My computer (Dim4600) is having problems with Norton and the regestry. I've had it for about 1.5 years and I think now is a good time to reinstall XP. Is there anything important to know before hand, I've never installed an entire platform before?
Thanks,
Jeff

If you are going to do a clean install ( Reformat, and Reinstall Windows XP ) you should follow the procedures below.
1. Save everything you want to keep on a cd or dvd disk.
2. Reformat, and Reinstall windows according to the Denny site provide
3. Install SP-2 if its not already on your windows xp os cd.
4. Install the ChipSet driver ( Very Important )
5. Install the video card driver. You should have a more current driver downloaded from the web site www.ati.com and burned to a cd for later install. Once you install the video card driver, you may have to go into the Display Properties to reset the monitor resolution if necessary. Some times you do and some times you do not have to. ( During the install of windows xp, microsoft will probably install a generic video card driver for your, but this will not be the most current one. Many of them work well and others can be improved. We just uninstall them, than install a better version of the video card driver ourselves.)
6. Install everything else, such as your modem driver, sound card driver, Microsoft critical updates from their site, etc
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/devices.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&SystemID=DIM_P4_4600&os=WW1&osl=EN This is your Dim 4600 driver download site for the ChipSet driver, and so on. Some of the drivers you will need, and others, like the video card driver will not be listed and you should have a current one downloaded prior to the install of windows.
