Reloading Win XP

I suspected a virus and reloaded XP of my Dimesion 2400 using the XP disc and related resoure discs. I have two problems that have stopped me:
1.Cannot access internet with this computer
2.Cannot make monitor adjustment (only a default monitor is listed) factory monitor being used
(icons and windows are too large)

I found in the "Hardware installed" on this computer 4 items as being installed but unable to function without additional downloads. They are:

1 Video Controller (VGA Compatible)
2. Multimedia Audio Controller
3 S M Bus Controller
4 Ethernet Controller (I suspect that this is preventing my ISP connectivity)

Why didn't these load with the XP disk or resourse disks that came with the computer? Where can I find these controllers to complete the re install process?

Installing drivers is a manual process, specific to the hardware on your computer.  As you appear to have a working computer available, you will need to download and copy to a CD or flash drive various drivers and copy to the 2400 and then install:

All drivers available here:

1.  chipset driver

2. video driver.  Not sure which you will need from the list of 5, but start with the 2nd on the list and see if that works. If not, try another.

3. If integrated audio, the ADI 19x sound driver

4. Network:  Broadcom 4401 network controller (for ethernet access)

Give this all a try and report back how it goes.

Thank you, but I been to that site and I don't know which of all those drivers listed and the correct ones even after providing my service tag number

You don't really have a choice with regard to the chipset, Ethernet, and audio controllers unless you have added one of the last two items to the machine since you got it.  All are onboard and are labeled as drivers.  Some of the categories have diagnostic utilities or patches included in the menu but these are not essential for operation.

Follow Europa's advice.  When you get to the video driver it depends on how old your machine is.  My D2400's were purchased in the fall of 2003 and prefer the Springdale G driver.  The D2400 went out of production in early 2005 and just before that happened I think the video driver switched to the Grantsdale.  The 845 G/GL/GE/PE/GV generic driver is supposed to work with all of them but mine doesn't particularly like it.

Worked like a charm, thank you so very much. I was close to solving the problem on my own but was quite hesitant to make choices. My only question now is whether the XP cd (when reloaded)erased, along with everything else, the probable virus that caused my woes in the first place?

Provided you did a clean install, which means that you delete the main NTFS partiton and create a fresh partition in its place, and not a repair install (which simply reloads the system files), any virus which was present will be gone.
