Remote Shutdown / Re-Boot via LAN
I am trying to find a way to remotely shut down/re-boot a Windows 98 computer system across my LAN, when it stops allowing new connections via the remote desktop software. The remote computer system does not have a monitor, keyboard or mouse attached to it, therefore I need an way to re-boot without hitting the on/off switch. The machine I am using to control the remote computer has Windows XP Pro installed.
Any ideas would be great appreciated.
TIA,
Mike

I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner, but as long as you're currently connected to the remote Win98 box, and able to access the Start button, there is a way you can force a restart under these conditions, without adding any software. Open msconfig from Start - Run, and go to the Startup tab. Either uncheck something that's already checked and then re-check it, or check something that isn't checked, and then uncheck it. Press Apply and OK below, and you'll be prompted to either Restart or Exit Without Restart. Select the former, and the system will automatically reboot.
Obviously, if you have no control over the remote system, this won't work, and about your only recourse is going to be to hit the Reset or Power button.
