removing unwanted desktop icon

I'm having trouble with an AOL icon on my desktop -- it doesn't work when I click on it, and when I've tried to right-click delete it, my computer always freezes for a few minutes.

Is there any way to fix this icon?

What are your computer specs? What version of Windows are you using (ie XP, 98, ME)

Are you using AOL to browse the web? If so, get Firefox and use that instead.

AOL is known to mess up computers.

What happens when you try to click the icon? Is there an error message?

For now, I would reinstall AOL. That has a good chance of fixing the problem.

You can get rid of some of the AOL junk by clicking on Start/right click on My Computer/Click Open/Double click on Local Disk/Double click on Program file folder/ Than find anything that is AOL related and delete it.  Than double click on the Common File folder and locate anything related again to AOL, and delete it.  Now you have to into the registry, and delete anything there that is AOL related...

Or do what many other's have done, since AOL is a bugger to get rid of, and that my friend is reformatting, and reinstalling windows.  Yep, a tough job, but the only way I was able to get rid of that AOL

Windows XP.  Yes, I use AOL to e-mail and surf.  I can open AOL fine through the Start Menu, it's just this annoying icon I've been trying to delete.

In terms of deleting all AOL-related items in the Program Files folder -- is that essentially removing and reinstalling AOL?

umalid,

Thanks for using the Dell Community Forum.

I realize it sounds like passing the buck but when it comes to AOL's software, the best source is AOL themselves.  I'll keep this here and see if anybody has anything to pass along but I would recommend getting in touch with them also.
