Emergency backup is not a bad idea, as hard drives are fairly inexpensive these days. Posting you model of Dell will help others in answering you.

E520...  do you think If I just unplugged the XP drive everything will be kosher.. Someone did say that is a dual boot setup with 2 drives there is some Vista startup info put on the XP drive, but if you do run into trouble, you can boot from the xp disc and it will repair the problem ??

"that is a dual boot setup with 2 drives there is some Vista startup info put on the XP drive,"

True, I have never tried to boot from an XP drive configured this way, without the Vista drive present.

Some have reported the following to remove the bootloader from XP

"running as Admin, delete the Boot folder and boot.bak, bootmgr.sys, bootsect.bak files from the root directory of the XP drive.Open up boot.ini in Notepad and remove the comments added by Windows Vista installation and then save it."

Here is a method that looks a little safer

  1. Boot your computer in to Windows XP.
  2. Ensure you have the Vista DVD image emulated or in the DVD drive.
  3. Go to “Start” and “Run”. Type in “e:\boot\bootsect.exe /nt52 ALL /force” (without quotes, and replacing e: with the drive letter of your Vista DVD).
  4. Restart the computer, and you will notice the boot selection menu is gone.
