Replace vista with XP on xps 1710

Hello, I'm about to order an xps 1710, but i just noticed my only OS choice is vista, and I've heard vista has worse performance than xp in the gaming department. What I wanted to know is if it's safe to format the HDD and install XP. My system specs are: ntel Core 2 Duo T7400 Nvidia Go 7950gtx(512MB) 2Gb SDRAM DDR2 667MHZ 80GB HDD 7200RPM Thank you very much in advance

why don,t you first give vista a try, i have it on one of my computers, i build my own, and its a better operating system than xp in my opinion... but if you decide to go with xp, you should be able to install it,,,will have to formatt your hard drive first..

Unless you buy an additional license, you are forbidden by law to use another OEM copy of XP on any machine other than the one it came on.

Yeah, you may be right, I should give it a try, it's just that I've heard lots of people saying that it doesn't run games very well.

That's the problem, I don't want to switch to vista, I want to switch from vista to xp.

As someone who does this for a living, I can tell you that I see no compelling reason to switch to Vista at this point.  Now, Office 2007 is a whole different animal.  Switch as soon as you can.

Then what is stopping you?  Buy a copy of XP, format the drive and off you go.  Dell is not going to sell many (very very few) models with XP.  The best way to get one would be thru their refurbished store.

Ok, I just wanted to know if there would be some kind of compatibility issues with hardware and that kind of stuff.

agree, if vista runs on your rig, then xp will most certainly be able to run on it....i build computers for my personal use, and was able to get vista running everything on it, though some the drivers i have installed are beta.

as to running games on vista, you might be very correct in that xp would be the better choice for the time being.

as for upgrading to a vista for those that are interested, agree with other thread, no hurry ,,, enjoy xp for a bit longer until the 3rd party folks get drivers out for vista, and i have heard a few complaints about that some drivers are missing for vista for certain application.s

WHY IS THIS SITE RUNNING SO SLOW?/

Quite the contrary.  If the machine can handle Vista, XP will be no problem whatsoever, plus all of your old programs will be XP compatible whereas on Vista, you were "iffy" at best.

Thank you very much guys, you've been of great help, however, I have one more question: Will I need to download new drivers for everything? If that's the case, should I download them from Dell, or is there a site where I can get them?

Get them from Dell in the Drivers and Downloads section in the left hand pane.
