Reset Admin Password for XP

I am trying to reset my admin password that is required on initial start up. I do not know the password and and have tried many different options from software to safe mode start ups. When you first turn the compter on, even in safe mode, it shows the user name and promts for a paswword. How do I get past this so I can erase that administrator account? Or what can I do to learn what the old password was? I have tried t2software programs that are supposed to work on start up, but have failed because of this initial start up password request. Thanks for any help because this is very frustrating.

There is only 1 admin login on this computer. On initial start up I get a blue screen with the admin name and it prompts for a password before the complete boot up is done. Therefore, I dont have access to any computer functions including the start tab, control panel, etc. I have to enter a password before I can continue and it is impossible to get passed this. Any other ideas?

Are you the only one using this computer?  If not, you can access through the other account via the control panel then selecting user accounts which would enable you to access the admin account and either delete it or change it.  I had the same thing happen and had to do it this way.  A few days later, I found the password on a post note that slipped through behind the desk.

I have a problem dealing with an admin account which was already on this computer (less than 2 weeks old).  I did as you suggested went to control panel>user accounts>--clciked on "magae this account" & on Admin account--tried to change the name--wouldn't let me--tried to remove password--again wouldn't let me--.  I CAN log in under my user account--however, there is a "feature" i want to utilize (Windows Easy transfer) which for some reason has "Admin Prviledges" only--so u can see whey I'd like to remove the admin account & install myself as the Administrator.  There has got to be 1) a REASON why the above poster & I both have Admin accounts that don't belong to us on our computers--and 2) a way to DELETE these accounts..

Addendum to this issue--FINALLY got with Dell Support--they (somehow) re-installed Windows & now I was able to log on as "User" account.  i didn't REALIZE until recebtly trying to install a program that i did NOT have Admin priviledges 7 couldn't log on as Admin to get those priviledges.--i also discovered I have NO System restore as well ansd when I tried to Re-Install Windows Vista--the DVD  informed me I need to be logged on as Administartor to do so. Ughhh--you mentioned a Disc of some sort ERD--what is that--where do i get it---info, please?
