Why don't you just download the drivers you need? You are not going to be able to get a resource CD. Even if you had one the drivers on it would be severly outdated.

Does that mean that when and if I do a format, that I wouldn't have to have any drivers from the resource cd or windows cd to get drivers from? All I would have to do is get on the web and get all my drivers from there? And that would work? Because this has been my biggest problem from the start when formatting my drive. Can't ever find the drivers and Windows wont' automatically find them for some reason. So I had to get Dell Tech to walk me thru to find and extract them manually. If what you say is true then that would solve the problem of having to call them and finding them manually. hmmmmmmm???

Exactly.

The driver on the CD is only current at the time when the CD was created or when you computer was manufactured.

Instead of creating a new CD everytime a driver is updated, they are usually placed online for other users to download as well, so if you wish to install using the latest driver, the web is where you should look.

There is a good reason for using the Resource CD - the drivers should be the same as when your machine left the factory, thus tested by Dell to ensure they work with your hardware.

In any case, not everything comes on the Resource CD, so you may need to download anyway.

How often are you reformatting?

I have reformatted two PCs in 20+ years and as it turned out, it was unnecessary…

Just ONCE. But am considering doing it one more time to clean up stuff that I can't get out of the registry safely. Like ZoneAlarm! It is everywhere and I don't want it there. It has caused problems with my ISP for some reason. I really would like to start fresh just once more. Not that I want to mess up all my "settings" though. It took forever to get it all back to the way I had it the first time I formatted. I don't think I will need to do it again after that. But hey, ya never know. Good to know about those drivers for future use too.
I am guessing you don't install a bunch of stuff and then decide you don't want it there? A bad habit of mine!

Jolynn: Thanks for answering that. I was worried that you might have found a new hobby!

Having been in the PC game before there was a “PC”, I am pretty stable as far as software… I have NO games except what was on the Windows CD. Software ranges from a $50 cross stitch program to a $12,000 CAD/CAM program. Now if I was only smart enough to figure out how to use either of them…
