Restore Question

Hi all,

My E520 was acting up and wouldn't run any programs.  I was able to go into start and do a restore to the day before.  It's ok now.

I had installed a program, MAGIX MP3 Maker.  I don't know if that had anything to do with it messing up.  I'm scared to install it again.  Anyway when I did the restore to the day before, it deleted the desktop shortcuts and start menu items for that program, but it left the folders and some files.  Like text files, etc. but no exe files.  Is that how it's suppose to restore?  I thought it would delete it completely.

Should I delete all the folders before I install it again (if I do)?

I guess I won't worry about what happened.  It was working fine.   I left it on when my husband came home from work and when he went to use it a couple hours later it wouldn't run programs.  I didn't see what he did.  Like Quicken, it said a ini file was missing.  Then the window wouldn't close and the task mgr showed no applications running that I could close.  The screen was all chopped up and I couldn't get back to the desktop.  I was able to use the start button to get to system restore and that worked.

Yes, the restore function is working normally.  Though it may do some other things, the primary result of running System Restore is to replace the Windows registry with a previous version.  The registry is the list that Windows uses to tell it how to access the programs you install.  Without the entries in the registry the programs will not normally run properly or at all because Windows will be unable to find all the components of the program.  Replacing the registry does not delete any files, and leaving them in place does not usually cause a problem with subsequent installations.  When you install the program after you have removed it with System Restore the installation wizard simply copies the files over the top of those already present and makes changes in the registry so Windows can find them again.
