Restoring Laptop using Reinstallation DVD issues

Hello,

I am attempting to restore a Inspiron 1720 Laptop to its original condition using the Reinstallation DVD Windows Vista Home Premium 32BIT DVD that came with the laptop.

I boot-up the laptop via the DVD (F12 at boot-up, select DVD).
Select the langauge, time and currency, and keyboard method (US).
Click on Install Now
Agree to the Terms
Click in Custom (Advanced) (to do a clean install)
Select the partition (largest available one)
In this area, I have attempted to click on Drive options (advanced) and did the Format option to ensure this was a completely clean installation

The Installing Windows screen comes up, it has:

Copying Windows Files
Expanding files
Installing features
Installing updates
Completing installation

It goes through the first 4 steps without any noticeable issues. After the Installing updates, it reboots and continues with the Completing installation.

It just hangs on this part. After about 30 - 45 minutes, the screen turns black and all I see is the mouse. I am able to move the mouse, but the screen remains black. The harddrive does not appear to be doing anything useful.

I let this run overnight (about 10 hours) and it was still sitting on the black screen with the mouse (was still able to move it).

So, I turned off the computer, and let it restart. It tries to load Windows but just hangs on the screen with the little green scroll bar. I never get to the Windows icons and whatnot.

I have attempted this process four times now, all same results. It hangs on the Completing installation.

Any recommendations on what might be occurring?

Thanks for any help!

David

i had exact same problem you mentioned i have Inspiron 1720 (bought on Nov26' 2007) and when i tried to install using dell provided home premium DVD the installation did not move after 4 th step.

I am in office rightnow Dell has sent out a new DVD and i will attempt to install using it. Also i can give you steps to do a Dell image restore using command prompt when back at home.

Hello, Thanks for your response. This seems to an issue with the SATA drive laptops. I ended up finding a resolution in another forum. Basically, go through the steps. When you get to the part that asks you which partition to use, there is a Load Drivers option in the bottom left corner. Click on Load Driver and insert the Drivers and Utilities DVD. On mine, it only gave me one option of drivers (relating to SATA drivers). I installed/loaded this. Then continued on with the re-install from there. The process then completed successfully. Hope that helps. David
