Restoring Shut Down Menu--Win 98 SE

I have a Dimension XPS R450

Normally for shut down the menu that appears is Standby--Restart--Restart in MS Dos

I have never used the Standby but a few days ago clicked it to check the response

Although computer remained on with a dark screen I could not get it to "wake up" or start responding as I had expected. Finally had to press manual off button on console to shut it down then same buton to start again.

I did not get scolded for improper shut down but after startup I noticed that the shut down menu is now missing the Standby option. I called Dell Support on it and was told to go to Programs--Accessories and should find a Restore System Option there. Not found. Support told me not to worry as was not necessary for computer operations.

I would still like to get it back if possible

Anyone?

I think you can restore the standby option through the screen saver tab and choosing settings button. Check to see if standby is set to never. Then change it to 1 hour. I saw an article about it once in PC World Mag Windows tips.

sburg,

You can restore the Standby option using the procedure given here but standby is notoriously unreliable on desktop systems and if you do restore it there is a better than average chance that it won't work and if it does it will eventually fail. Frankly, I don't believe it's worth the effort to restore it, particularly since you never used it.
