roxio UPnp service 9 stopped working AND computer error

Does anyone know the solution to the error message at startup that states the following:

"Roxio UpnP service 9 stopped working"  This has started occuring at startup of my computer in Vista.  I have deleted the drag-to-disk program (since there were known issues with that) however the problem persists.  I have Roxio Media Creator 9.

Funny, this program was supposed to be fully compatible with Win Vista when it was released.  In fact, Roxio even stated they had "partnered" with Microsoft to ensure its compatibility with Vista.

Anyhow, any solutions would be appreciated.

Have you tried reinstalling Roxio V9?  I had to do that on mine and I still have some intermittent problems (the label creator program even freezes occasionally).  I'm not convinced V9 is 100% Vista compatible.  I also have Nero Ultra V7 and with the latest update it seems to be Vista compatible - even the "Aero" features.

(I have both on my PC as I do PC support).

No, I haven't tried reinstalling the program.  I might do that next.  It's weird though, sometimes I get the error message(s) on consecutive boots and other times, no error messages at all.  When I do see error messages it is the one I described above and sometimes that one in combination with a com surrogate error message.

As far as the com surrogate error message, I found the following link with instructions to fix it:

Unfortunately, the error message(s) persist, just not on every boot.

Hi Scott784
I noticed you have Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme music card.
Were you able to get the proper driver download after VISTA OS upgrade?
I could not find that anywhere?

Yes, go to the Creative web site at the following link:

This link is for the driver download for Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme Music Card (32 bit version).  FYI...Dell's support site also has a listing.  However, for some strange reason I had a problem with trying to get the driver to work when I used support.dell.com.

Anyhow, hope all goes well using Creative's site.  It did for me.

Thanks for that information.
Would you be able to say If one had to first uninstall previous version of the driver prior to install this latest one OR can you jsut download it stright as this is an upgrade?
Thanking you

I just received this message "COM Surrogate has stopped working". It was right after I installed Verizon VCAST Music Essentials Kit. It doesn't say it's Vista capable and I can't find an upgrade for it anywhere. The driver for VCAST music installed with no problems. When I attach my cell phone, Motorolla razor, to try and sync the music, it can't connect. Any suggestions…I was trying to get away from having both cell phone and mp3 player.

Thanks. Kathy

The COM surrogate is a separate error message from the one I had mentioned earlier.  However, I thought I would point out that I discovered (at least on my PC) that the culprit for my COM surrogate was the installation of URGE within Win Media Player.  When I uninstalled URGE (back in April), I never got the COM surrogate error message again.

From Kathy's comments, it appears this COM surrogate error message can occur from a variety of multimedia apps.  That is something to keep in mind when installing these things within Vista.  Then if you get the COM surrogate error message, you just might know what is causing it.

Snow, sorry missed your post from April.  I just thought I'd mention that I normally uninstall the old app or driver before installing a new one.  However, I am not sure that it makes any difference particularly where drivers are concerned because the system will update to the latest one.

I think programs (sometimes) might be a different matter though.  If you think about it to the extreme, what if you've got a big program with a bunch of bloat attached to it.  Now you upgrade to the latest version. In theory, your machine should remove the older version of a program.  However, if it's a large program with lots of extras attached to it, you just might be left with junk on your PC that you don't want or need.  Just my thoughts here.

Hey, glad to hear you seem to have overcame the iastor errors with your Dimension 9200.  I've been following that other board.  I initially experienced problems myself with my XPS 410 with iastor.  I did all the fixes discussed and not sure what corrected the problem but I haven't had those errors in a long time.  My suspicion is that the firmware update for my optical drive did more than anything to help solve the problem.
