RPC error

I recently reformatted my dell dimension 4600 computer. I installed everything back just like it said to on the dell website. After I formatted the hard drive, and got everything back on the computer I started to get a RPC error and my computer would restart 60 seconds later. I was reading some of the messages on this forum and read one that talked about the blaster worm. And I am assuming that is what I have. I followed the information from that posting and did what it said to do, but I have one problem. I didn't have my anti-virus software installed on the computer yet so that I could detect if I had the blaster worm and get it removed. So I tried installing it last night, it installed fine, did not have any errors. But Norton Antivirus will not open up. It was on one of the resource cd that came with my dell computer and i installed it from it. But when it didn't work, i tried to install the mcafee software, and the installation screen comes up, but then it just disappears. Oh yeah, when I opened up the norton software, the screen would come up as if it were going to open, then it disappears too. Then today when I woke up, I got on the computer to check my email thru outlook express, and i get error messages for both email accounts i have in there and they are both thru 2 different servers. The message says the connection to the server has failed. I'm guessing that has something to do with the antivirus settings, but I cant change them settings if I can't open the program!! My computer has also been running extremely slow since I formatted it. I have to sit here and wait forever for a program to open up. And my DSL connection is a lot slower now.

Can anyone please help me with these problems.....I am getting so frustrated with this!!

Thanks!!

jdwatson23,

You can do an online virus scan here. That will let you know whether or not you still have any viruses on your computer.

You might consider another reinstallation of Windows XP and make sure all the system drivers are installed using the links here. After you reinstall Windows make certain that you enable the Internet Connection Firewall prior to going online to avoid another problem with Blaster.

oh yeah and also when i install some software, i will get an error messaging saying the software hasn't been tested to run with windows xp and it is recommended to stop installation, i never had any problems with this before i formatted the hard drive. almost everything i try to install will say that, and they worked fine on the computer before and i didnt get them errors

i found a thing to remove the blaster worm for my computer thru a link on dell, and when i ran the blaster fix it thing, it said the worm was not found on my computer, but i am still getting the RPC message and my system shuts down. does anyone know of any other reason i would get that message? when i tried to install the critical update that i was supposed to after running the blaster worm removal program, it would not install, it started too and the screen just disappeared from my screen.  alot of stuff is just disappearing from my screen! i cannot use my antivirus software to see if i have any other virus because it will not stay open, and i tried to do the free virus scan on my computer from a website and that screen closed too!! some one please help me before i go insane! haha

thanks

Did you follow this part of Denny's advice? make certain that you enable the Internet Connection Firewall prior to going online to avoid another problem with Blaster.

You can get reinfected almost immediately after connecting to the Internet unless you've installed all the Windows critical updates.

yes i enabled the firewall protection. so far i havent got the rpc message yet, but i think im going to go ahead and format the computer anyhow, cuz i've tried everything else and i'm still getting errors on my computer and i cannot open up some programs, they open then hurry up and close and i dont know what is causing that. and i cannot install some software on my computer because of the not compatiable with windows xp error message comes up. like when i try to install my logitech quick cam, it will not work properly on the computer, but did before i formatted, now it messes up the computer, so i guess i will format again for the 3rd time in the last month! and see if i do everything right this time!

thanks for all the help

Jamie
