rstrui.exe, system restore service
Hey there!
Windows XP sp2 Home Edition
I can't start the system restore service. It can't be started through neither
start>programs>systemtools>systemrestoreservice or through
start>controlpanel>sysytem>systemrestoreservice .
In the eventlist I'm getting an
srservice, ID 104 and no respons from Microsoft.
Do not find anything on Microsoft's supportpages.
I tried
cmd,
net start, and it is listed.
I tried
cmd,
sfc /scannow, with no errormessage.
Any idea out there?

Open Event Viewer (start>programs>adminstrative tools>event viewer).
Click System in left pane
Sort list in right pane by date
Look on date you ran sfc for "Windows File Protection"
There should be at least 2 entries. Double-click each to see what they say. One should say "started", the other one "stopped". Anything in between those 2 will be your error messages. Write them down exactly and post here. If just the 2 entries, sfc ran without problems.
Are you sure System Restore Service isn't set to disabled?
Click start>run
Type in: services.msc
Click ok
Find System Restore Service in the list, right-click and select Properties. Make sure it's set to Automatic.
Reboot the PC and see if you can manually set a Restore Point. Then test it by restoring the system with that Restore Point.
If none of that works, here's a link that shows how to reinstall System Restore Service: http://bertk.mvps.org/html/tips.html#ReinstallSR

If System Restore still isn't working, have you tried the instructions at link in my previous post to fix it?
And if that doesn't work, you may need to do a Repair/Reinstall of Windows. It won't damage your personal files or any software you installed (always good to back things up, just in case) but you will have to reinstall all the Windows updates/hotfixes after the Repair.
Here's link to do Repair/Reinstall from Dell:
