Hold the "Windows + R" and type the following command :

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer for 32-bit Operating System

C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer for on 64-bit Operating System.

Then follow the steps provided by DELL-Madhur B and check if it works.

This didn't work.  When I typed in the command, message appeared, "Windows cannot find C;\Program.  Also, there still isn't a compatibility tab in Windows 8.  The only tabs are: General, Shortcut, Security and Details.

Hold the "Windows + R" and type the following command :

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe for 32-bit Operating System

C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe for on 64-bit Operating System.

Then follow the steps provided by DELL-Madhur B and check if it works.

Corrected.

When I type in the command for a 64-bit operating system and click ok, it brings up a search page on Bing relating to what a 32-bit & what a 64-bit system is.  As I have said previously, there isn't a compatibility tab in the Windows 8 version.

What version of Windows?

If this just started, you  might try a System Restore to latest date available before the problem started. Personal files will be ok but you will have to re-install any updates, hotfixes, new software, etc. that was originally installed after the date used for the Restore.

You can also try running IE8 in "no add-ons" mode. Right-click the IE8 icon and choose "Start without add-ons". If that works, one of the add-ons is causing the problem. If that works, disable the add-ons (tools>manage add-ons) and the re-enable them one at a time to find the offender. Then remove and reinstall that add-on.

If none of this helps, Google around and you'll find lots of people with the same IE8 problem and a variety of fixes that may or may not work for you.

Version is Windows 8.  This problem has been present since I first started using Windows 8 on new computer.  If I right click on IE8, "Start without add-ons" is not listed.  Fred

BTW: If you have Win 8, don't you have IE9?

You may have to dial back the level of User Account Control (UAC) in Win 8. Do that with caution if this PC is used by several people, especially if some of the users are kids.

You can launch IE8 and click Tools>Manage Add-Ons, but I suspect changing UAC will solve your problem.

Because there isn't a version of IE9 for Windows 8.

Dialed UAC back to minimum and doesn't solve problem either.

I just checked the Internet Explorer 10 on my Windows 8 64 Consumer Preview as stated there is no compatibility preview for the iexplore.exe.

Close all instances of Internet Explorer and hold Ctrl when launching it, are you still prompted to run as an administrator?

If so I suggest uninstalling Internet Explorer.

Once that is done restart your machine. You should then try installing Internet Explorer 10 via the same method as uninstallation except checking the box instead of unchecking it.

If not then it suggests there is a third party addin causing the problem

Ignore holding down Ctrl; it seems to not apply to Windows 8 either.
