RUNDLL error cascade

Certain common operations trigger a cascade of RUNDLL errors - they just keep coming, until I restart. It happens if I try to open the control panel, or go to "Explore" from Start.  (Other things as well, I am sure.)  I have a Dimension 8300, running Windows XP Home Edition.

The message says," Error loading C:\WINDOWS\dll~1
The specified module could not be found."
Just before the system shuts down, I get a message from run32dll.exe, saying that "the application failed to load because it failed to initialize."

I recently tried to install a Logitech optical mouse - it worked fine for a while, then mysteriously stopped. Also, I started to use an iPod Nano, without problems. Thinking that there might be some connection with my problem, I used System Restore to go to a date before I started to use these items. This had no effect on the problem.

Would appreciate any ideas of other things to try!

You might possibly be infected with some spyware. Download Ad-aware ( http://www.dsvs.org/10 ) and run a scan with that and remove any critical objects. Also download X-Cleaner ( http://www.tinyurl.com/2bvur ).

Goodluck.

Thanks, SitelTech.

Those programs found some potential problems. But after the deletions I am still having the error cascade.

Thanks for the suggestion, SitelTech. I looked up the topic at support.microsoft, and am a bit uncomfortable trying it.  I am not sure what else may have to be reinstalled after I do it, or what the potential is for data loss. So I will leave that until I have tried other options.

I had a problem with aWinFix infestation about a month ago, and got that resolved using help from the HijackThis board. I have now posted on that board my HijackThis log from after the problem was fixed, and also a current log. Maybe someone will be able to spot the problem by comparing the two.
