Your answers that the search function for most of you works normally made me look more closely! (I really thought like Dell Solution Center, everyone would say that since SP2, search doesn't work off the start button).
The "solution" is actually quite simple - solution in "quotations" as there isn't really a problem to start off with!
Just figured out the search windows resulting from RIGHT and LEFT clicking the start button are slightly different. -selecting the search window off the the start button (ie by Right clicking), the default search area is "start menu" only (at least for me).
You need to scroll down, to see a menu with a drop-down list.
And if I choose my hard drives to search from in the drop down list, a complete search is done.
(I am surprised I couldn't find this "solution" in my google searches).
