Have you requested the disks from Dell?

It's been a few years since I did this, but I seem to remember having to type in the exact file location
in the 'Source' window for the file I was trying to update/replace

Thanks for the reply obey_gravity.

I didn't realise I could ask for the disks from Dell. I'll give them a call to see if I can have them sent out.

Also, sfc doesn't give me the option to specify where to look for the file. I runs for a bit, finds a file it needs to replace, and then askes me to put the XP setup disk in and press ok. I tried borrowing an XP disk from a friend as well but it wants the one for the XP version on my machine. That reminds me of another thing actually, I have XP Media Edition but it's asking for an XP Professional disk. Is that normal?

Ok  I guess you've seen This by now.

As to the sfc, have you read This ?

And it's my understanding that the Media Xp is basically Pro, with a few enhancements for 'media'
so that could be 'normal'

OK, looking at the MS update, my XP came with SP2 already installed. I do however have a directory called SP2 in the i386 directory. Is this the correct directory to set the service pack location registry value to?

If sfc is asking for the XP CD, it means it's already searched all the 'normal' places on the HD for a backup copy of whatever file it wants but didn't find it. So your only solution is to insert an XP CD of the proper version.

Sorry, reread first post and saw you already did what I was suggesting.
