Runtime error message

I have just connected my son's Inspiron 530 E2160, running Vista, to his college's internet server. It connects, asks for his log on details which he inputs successfully and it then comes up with an error message saying "Runtime error, Internet Explorer detected a problem and is closing down". Can you advise what the problem might be and how to fix it.
