There seems to be something fishy with startup items.
Type MSconfig in search box ... Press Enter and continue
Click Startup tab. Disable all the startup items, except the ones related to your Antivirus (Mc affee or Norton). Also check under services ..select "Hide all Microsoft Services" option. This will list only the 3rd party services. Uncheck all the suspicious services (whose description is not given)

Thanks...still seems to mess up even when I disable all startup programs and services...
The problem seems to involve the graphics drivers. I have a Geforce Go 8400M GS. Whenever I set my display driver to default VGA, both problems (explorer.exe and rundll32.exe runtime errors) disappear. Also, whenever I try to load the nvidia control center in the control panel, I get another runtime error for that program. I have installed the most recent drivers from Dell, but this does not seem to solve the problem...
If you disable NvCpl Daemon / Run DLL32.exe you will have a problem. That is the Nvidia driver.(I use Nvidia drivers for my gpu. If you use Dell look at your startup programs).
I have the nvidia geforce 8400M GS 128 mb. I cannot find drivers for this card on the nvidia web site; only dell offers drivers for this card. I assumed it was a special OEM version made for the inspiron line, and only Dell had the appropriate drivers. If there are some better drivers offered by Nvidia for this card, perhaps that could solve the problem; do you have an idea which ones might work for this card? I'm guessing at this point it's an incompatibility between vista and the Nvidia drivers...
Nope, sorry, never did. I ended up reformatting and restoring factory defaults, which fixed it and did not return. I suspected it was something to do with my Lojack theft protection software and wireless network security settings--I first got the problem (I had been using the comp and other software fine for a month or so) after I installed the Lojack theft protection and then went jumping around on university wireless networks. This could just be a coincidence, though; it's hard to say. But I didn't reinstall the Lojack after rebooting, and it seems to be working fine now. I'm curious--do you have the Lojack software, or is it just a coincidence? -Cameron
No, I do not have lojack. I am going to be doing a clean install of Vista in the AM, so hopefully that gets rid of the problem. For now I have removed the nvidea drivers which has eliminated the problem...
Ok, sorry--I have no ideas, then. I tried everything with reinstalling those drivers, manually removing every reference to anything nvidia in the registry, and nothing worked but a full reformatting and reinstall.

Any advice appreciated, as always.
