Restart the computer in Safe Mode by pressing F8 key during startup.
Do you still encounter this problem?

If not, click Start > Run, type msconfig and press Enter. Select selective startup option and uncheck all other options. Click Ok and restart the computer.

If you do not get the problem, run msconfig and check these options one by one restarting the computer after each one, until you find which option caused the problem.

No, don't continue with that process.
Have you downloaded and installed all of the Critical updates for WinXP?
Microsoft Windows Update
If you have, and still have the problem, then it may be a virus or spyware.
Run a full system virus scan.
Download SpyBot Search and Destroy , and run it.

Unfortunately, it sounds like you may have to re-install windows.  Explorer is one of the main components of the windows GUI, and you probably notice that the screen blanks out, then comes back and all the little icons in the task bar (near the clock) disappear after one of those errors.  If you have all the updates, have scanned for viruses, and have deleted all spyware, you may have no other choice.

Fortunately, it's not too difficult to reinstall windows, if you prepare for it.  Since your computer is only 6 weeks old, you probably don't have a lot of data to back up.  Your best bet for more info on a Windows reinstall is to go to the Software - Windows XP board and ask about your problem or read a few other threads on reformatting.
