Safe Disk Cleaner for "garbage files"
Is there a safe, free or shareware disk cleaning utility out there?
Just upgraded from Windows ME to XP and want something really safe. I used CM Disk Cleaner with ME but wonder if there is one that's even better. I'm most afraid of deleting files I can't restore, or not knowing which are really safe to delete. As risky as I ever got was disabling System Restore in order to remove .cpy files that had accumulated but once in a while Windows wouldn't reload properly after one of these thorough cleansings and I'm afraid to fool in the registry with XP.
Anyone "been there, done that" ? Appreciate your ideas.

Thank you for this suggestion! I looked up the site with the HD Valet download link. Lots of other good downloads on this site as well. I'll give this program a go and see if I like it.
All best

FINALLY. I've been looking for the disk clean-up utility which used to be under Programs>Accessories>System Tools in my old WIndows ME. Thank you for that. But how thorough is it?
In my quest to rid myself of unwanted files, I've typed in the "Run" dialog box %TEMP% , for example, and deleted files which Disc Clean-up didn't. I also used CM Disk Cleaner to get rid of broken shortcuts and dozens of other files with extensions I never heard of but were cluttering up the hard drive and could safely be deleted.
Does Windows XP's disk clean-up utility get rid of all of these?
