'Save As' function works very very slowly

Question

When I use 'Save As' from the file menu and click the drop down arrow beside 'My Documents' it takes 14 seconds to drop down  the folder tree so I can save a document to some other location.  We're having the identical problem on an almost new Inspiron 9300 and a one year old Dell desktop -- both running Windows XP with adequate RAM, regularly protected against viruses, etc., with Norton Internet Security.  Virtually the only programs we use are Microsoft Office programs, IE, Foxfire, and an Adobe image manipulation program.  Any ideas why this particular function is so slow?  Other similar drop down menus have no delay.  We've tried using the system restore function, cleaned out the temp files folder (as Symantec recommended), turned off Norton Security, but nothing's worked.  Does anyone have any suggestions? Are these computers connected to a network? If so, I would guess they're having difficulty finding a network drive and this is causing the delay. Do you have a disconnected network drive that needs to be removed?

Thanks for the suggestions.  The problem turned out to be virtual drives that had been set up when we had a home network.  Because these were non functional, the Save As function apparently tried to search them unsuccesfully each time.  As soon as I disconnected (i.e. deleted) those virtual drives, the Save As function on both computers started working properly again.  Thanks for the help!
