Scratch Disk

I have a Dimensions 2400, Win XP.  I recently got a message that there was very little memory left on my 'Scratch Disk' and recommending that I eliminate some applications to make more memory available.  I have no idea what my 'scratch disk' is or how to increase its memory capacity.  I have a 40 GB hard drive, 29 GB used, 11GB Free.  I recently increased my RAM to 1 GB which has increased my speed dramatically...but I don't know from a scratch disk.  Please advise.

Scratch disk is just free space on the hard drive allocated by a program for editing files,

Example: Adobe Photoshop will allocate scratch disk space for temp files to be stored while editing an image.

Thanks Mombo...now I understand.  The reference says: 'Scratch disks can be set to erase all data at regular intervals so that the disk space is left free for future use.' but gives no explanation as to how that can be done....???

Mombo....I should have mentioned that the application that would not open because of 'lack of scratch disk memory' was Adobe Photoshop 4.0....maybe I should contact Adobe for instructions on erasing the scratch disk????

Yes, I don't know much about Adobe Photoshop.

I opened the Photoshop application, went to Help/Photoshop Tips and Hints, and there found a complete explanation of how to configure the scratch disk (file, preferences, memory applications) as well as considerable other information.  I should have thought of that in the first place!

For anyone else who needs help with Photoshop, here is the URL:

Most of the material concerns Photoshop 5.0, but much applies to earlier versions as well.

Thanks again.
