Screen Saver Problems

My screen saver and monitor power saver functions often do not work. Sometimes they do work, but next time I'm away from the computer, they won't turn on. I've rebooted, reset the paramaters (screen saver selection, time settings, power saver time and hard disk off time). I have uninstalled all software that was installed since before this problem started (It began shortly after I downloaded Turbo Tax State). I've run Stinger, Spybot, Ad Aware, and Norton Checkup.

The computer is: Dimension 4400, P-4 1.8 Ghz, 80 Gb + 40Gb drive, 512 Mb RAM.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Have you tried a sysytem restore to prior to the onset of the problem?

I've tried 7 different restore points (back 3 weeks before I had this problem) and all I get is" there were no changes made to your computer, choose another restore point"

I'm lost.

Perhaps it's time to re-install your OS or at least do an XP repair from your CD - unless you have a Norton Ghost image to fall back upon.

I just re-loaded Win XP (as an "upgrade") over the top of the Dell installed XP, same problem. Short of a re-format and reload, I don't know what to do.

Re-formatting and a clean install of Win XP is not nearly as difficult as it used to be with Win9X.  Be sure to save things like your Windows Address Book (export it to a disc), any important e-mail, My docs etc. Also if you have saved your program download exe files put them in a folder and save to a disc.  This will speed up installing them again.
