script error (internet 6)

I have a 8200 inspiron 40gb--1.6gb--ser. tag #g5hjt11. windows xp

I am having problems with the internet--everytime I go online--I'll go to the web site and then go to the next page and maybe the following page--then it just sits there--I have to go out of the internet--wait a few minutes and go back in---same problem--or I'll go to a web site and then to the next page--I get an error  message on the status bar stating, "Done, but with error on page."

I checked with with microsoft, article Q306831--to resolve this issue (error on page) click start, then run--type "Regsvr32 urlmon.dll, then click ok--when prompted with "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded message, click ok.

I did this but stated "Loadlibrary("urlmon.dll) failed--The specified module could not be found." I then went into search "regsvr32 urlmon.dll--results were could not find file. I even checked in advanced file for hidden files, subfolders, etc.

What do I do now? It's getting me frustrated--not being able to search the web. This has been going on for about a month.

Can you do a System Restore to prior to the onset of the problem?

granny8,

There are a couple of things you can try if your System Restore does not go back to a date before the problem arose. Go to Start|Run, type sfc /scannow and click OK. (You may be prompted to insert your Windows XP Reinstallation CD.) That should replace the missing/corrupted urlmon.dll file.

If that does not succeed, place the XP Reinstallation CD in the drive. Go to Start|Run, type cmd and click OK. At the command prompt type:

expand x:\i386\urlmon.dl_ c:\windows\system32\urlmon.dll and

Substitute the letter of your CD-ROM drive for x in the above.

The second procedure will probably not be necessary.

Tried both fixes--At the last one at the command prompt--It stated: can not  open output file: c:\windows\system32\urlmon.dll.

How What???????

granny8,

Sorry, my error, you can't write to that folder from within Windows.

Go into C:\Windows\system32 and see if you have a file urlmon.dll. If so, right-click it and select Properties. It should be 444,928 bytes in size and be version 6.00.2800.1259.

granny8,

That has me stumped. The latest version Microsoft lists for the file is 6.00.2800.1106, which was a part of Windows XP SP1.

There are a couple of basic things to try. Do a full system virus scan with updated signatures if you haven't already done so. Download and run Spybot from here to remove any spyware which might be affecting your browsing.

If neither of those produce any change in behavior, you can reinstall Internet Explorer using the instructions here.
