If I understand you correctly, the install failed when upgrading SP1 to SP2. I have had much better luck with a clean install of SP2, although I have been able to upgrade in some cases. I don't see any reason it should not work for you, but SP2 is a complex upgrade and sometimes fails. I know it is a pain to do the full install, but your system will be much cleaner.

One suggestion I have heard many times is to do a full virus/spyware scan first and get the machine very clean. MS also has detailed suggestions of what to do to make the upgrade successful. I don't have the link, but it should be easy to find at the MS site.

Here is some info from microsoft on installing sp2  http://support.microsoft.com/xpsp2getinstall. Most people update without reinstalling windows. Get spyware blaster, ad-aware, and run virus scan to clean machine. If you have dial up get a sp2 disk from best buy or circuit city. You do need to take care of this as support for service pack 1 will be discontinued as of october 10 I believe. Sp2 has all the updates that are in sp1.
