Thanks James, that was the conclusion that I came to the first time as well as it was not a necessary upgrade for me.  Is it okay that I just did a system restore and not a uninstall of service pack 2?  I see where some computer companies, Comp USA etc. will install it for free.  I was thinking of doing that as it seems that I for some reason can't get it installed correctly.  I would like to figure out what the problem is but it seems a little beyond my scope.

I'm inclined to tell you not install SP2 and stick with SP1 (for now). There are just too many variables with each person's setup to consider.

System Restore is fine. MS lists it as an option if all else fails.

What Norton product do you have installed?

Do they install free only if it goes smoothly? What if they run up against the problems you did?
Then they may go 'on the clock' = $$

Before you try again I'd uninstall morpheus and bearshare then redo your adware scans. Update your BIOS and video driver. Then run the SFC command. It's preferrable to install SP2 from a cd.

You might check the setup log(s); you may see what's causing the system registry problems. Do this only after running SFC.

Yes, some good points there. I would dump Norton like a hot potato as well. :smileyhappy:

What are my options?  Sooner or later I'm going to need SP2 to operate everything?  Do you think that they'll come out with more fixes later and I should try again later?

Thanks all, I assume that there are directions for updating Bios and video drivers on the dell site.  I am unfamiliar with the SFC command, please advise.  Also, how would I go about checking the setup logs.  Is Symantec or Norton not a a good antivirus to have?  What should I get instead?  I think that uninstalling morpheus and bear shar won't be hard.

Thanks again!

Use your DELL Service tag to identify anything new for your particular model.

For an introduction to SFC: http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

Norton/Symantec products usually cause more problems than they prevent; McAfee is worse.

NOD32 is a good AV, for a good free one there is AVG7.

No, you won't need SP2 to operate everything, just to install any updates post-SP2.

Some options: look through the section "Before You Install SP2" on my site here for more suggestions on preparing your system for a successful SP2 install: http://jmfmvps.mvps.org/SP2.htm

I am not missing any patches for this right?  When I look on the dell site I don't see anything that they suggest except for updgrading BIOS?

I will try the others as well.

thanks,

To install SP-2 properly......( Microsoft has stated we should run a spyware program before the installation of SP-2, if you do not use the reformat and re-installation suggestions below )

Re-install windows in this order and it should work very well.....Have been doing it this way and some PC Mag's have suggested that it be done this way.......

1.   Reformat  ( Don't do a windows repair ) and Re-install windows xp

2.   Install SP-2 right after windows xp

3.   Install your ChipSet driver  ( Very important )

4.   Install the video card driver

5.   Make sure the Firewall is on and download Microsoft Critical updates

6.   Install everything else

Dim 4400 ( 2002 )
2.6 Ghz
Bios A06
768 MB DDR 2100
Windows XP Home
SP-2
1703 FP LCD monitor
PC-Cillin Internet Security .....Much better than Nortons

Well, all I pressed my luck and lost again.  I tried to reinstall and now got a windows config error in which I had to do a clean reinstall of windows.  I tried everything from all the spyware runs, bios was not an issue because last update was well before Sp2 rollout, installing in safe mode, disonnecting peripheals etc.  I guess that I am stuck with SP1.  I don't know what my next step should be.  I have ordered a cd, should I try again via that route...is it that important?  Should I hire someone to come in and install, obviously I can't do it.  I am a bit concerned that I'll never be able to get any new updates now if I don't install the service pack 2.

confused and frustrated!:smileymad:

Now that you have a clean installation of XP is an excellent time to upgrade to SP2 . . either with the downloaded full version, or one ordered from MS.

I really should reinstall again right after having this problem????  I have ordered a cd but am in the midst of also reinstalling all of my pertinent programs and data.  Do I try to install service pack 2 before reinstalling all programs again?  Without cd I will have to go onto to internet to download it.  I don't want to have to do this again if I don't have to!

If you don't want to aggrevate your any further this is what I would do if I were in your shoes.

Pay someone to do the whole install correctly. Get a written guarantee it will be done to your satisfaction. I say this because your system is borderline regarding the BIOS version. It may be required. The most recent version (A6) came out the same day as mine (A11 for the 4100 model). My install went well. You want to do the BIOS upgrade (if needed) before you start a clean install of the operating system. Download this program (Belarc):

http://belarc.com/free_download.html

Install it and run it. It will tell you the BIOS version number. If it's not the latest, ie A6, then I would pay someone to do everything to get your system to the point that you can install your programs. You should have *them* install your firewall and AV program as well; they have to be configured to work with SP2. If you decide to pay for the service you should request they do it with a slipstreamed XP SP2 cd. Get the BIOS version number first and post back.
