service.exe - Application Error

Have an Inspiron 8600 running on Windows XP-Pro.  Have had this laptop for about a year now.  This problem started about 3 months ago.  After about 3-4 hours of the laptop being continuously on, the following error message pops up:

“services.exe – Application Error

The instruction at “0x606d3352” referenced at “0x00000028”. The memory could not be “read”.

Click OK to terminate program.

Click CANCEL to debug program.”

When I click OK the following message pops up:

System Shutdown

This system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress and log off.  Any unsaved changes will be lost.  This shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM.

Time Before Shutdown:

Message

The message process “C:\\windows\system32\services.exe” terminated unexpectedly with status code -1. The system will now shutdown and restart.

When I click CANCEL to debug the program the system just locks up.

I have reloaded Windows XP Service Pack 2, but I am still getting the same problem.  Pls help.

jeda_knight,

There is a removal tool here. To prevent reinfection, make sure that you have an active firewall (but only one).

W32 Blaster.Worm, look for a removable tool at microsoft's website or other anti-virus websites.

Denny, I just ran the Symantec W32.Blaster.Worm Fix Tool 1.0.6.1 and I got a message at the end of the procedure that :

W32.Blaster.Worm has not been found on your computer.  I will leave the computer on to see if I still get the error message when I leave the computer of for 3-4 hours straight.

So any other thoughts?

if you know the problems are SASSER and BLASTER, you can try the Symantec removal tools:

for SASSER:

instructions:  http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sasser.removal.tool.html

removal tool:   http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FxSasser.exe

Your problem might be SASSER not BLASTER and follow instruction when using either, did you follow the intructions when you used blaster tool?

Jimmy, I posted to the virus/spyware forum.  I also ran Sasser and it found that I had no threat.  Any other advice or just wait for answers in the other forum?

I had this same problem over the last few days. I applied service pack 4 to my Windows 2000 and updated the security patch MS05 - 039  899588. The system is now fine. Hope this helps

bute,

I have Windows XP Pro.  Also, I ran that the security patch.  But unfortunately, the error message is active right now.  I have learned how to live with it by dragging the error message to the bottom right of the desktop.  I guess that is a work around.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Jeda,

I have just now read your posts.  My Inspiron 5100 does the exact same thing.  The only difference is that mine not only does it after extended use, but also after hibernating.  So, according to your last post, you've not gotten rid of it?  Help...

myrick,

No.  I have not solved it.  I am still looking for an answer.  What I do is when that error box pops up, I go and drag the box to the bottom of the screen and leave it there.  And I keep on working.  So it is NOT fixed.

If you know of a solution, pls forward the answer to me.  Sorry to get your hopes up myrick
