Settting up Computer as a Server

I was told that with XP, I can set up my home computer as server, such that others can simply use an FTP program or to place files onto my computer or use a web browser, with the FTP:// command to do the same?  Can someone help?  Please email to jaxnupe@comcast.net or post!!! Thx.

More than likely, Comcast is blocking Port 21 which is used for FTP commands.  The easier thing to do would be Remote Desktop Connection.  It's not FTP, but it is secure.

How does someone else access my computer?  Would they have to type my ip address in somewhere on there computer?

There are free ftp programs you could use. XP I'm sure has one. It works best if you both have high speed. You don't want to set up your machine as a server. You don't know enough and it wasn't made to act as a server. People can access your computer remotely, as if they were there, but I think (don't quote me) that you would need XP Pro on your computer. If you find out what you want to do, repost a question and maybe someone can get you started.

PS Not a good idea to put your email address on the net; you may get flooded with spam or worse.

Technically, and Windows OS can be a "Server" but a true Server Program authenticates users from within the Local Network and provides Routing, Firewall, and some FTP capability. 98, 2000, and XP can not perfomr those services.

If all you want to do is access your computer from a distant location, use the built-in Remote Desktop Connection program built-in to 2000 and XP Pro, download available from Microsoft for XP Home ( I believe Home will handle this).  Don't pay good money for programs such as GoTo My Pc, RDC will do the same thing and its free.
