sfc /scannow help

I have and IDE hard drive that i took out of someone else's computer and want to run sfc /scannow now on it. I can't do it in the computer now because of a bad spyware infection. I have an IDE to USB adapter that i'm using so essentially i'm turning the IDE hard drive into an external hard drive when i plug it in to my notebook. So my notebook has Vista Ultimate. The desktop hard drive has XP home on it.

So my question is can i run sfc /scannow on the external hard drive. I have an XP disc i can throw in the optical drive.

Any help will be appreciated thanks

No. SFC scans only the boot drive for corrupt protected system files.

Once the drive is connected via usb to another PC, scan the drive with good-up to date AV software to remove infections, return it to the original system then see if the PC will boot, then run sfc.
