sfc /scannow

Question

When I try to run sfc /scannow on my XPS410 I am instructed to insert the Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD.   The CD that came with my computer is Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Version 2005 with Update Rollup 2.   When I insert this CD I get the error message under a Windows File protection screen, 'The CD you provided is the wrong CD.'   What brought this on is that when I tried to run Disk Cleanup I got a message that some of the original Windows files had been replaced with incorrect files.   Any suggestions on what I need to do to get the original Windows files back?

Try start>run>cmd   type ckdsk /f   note the space after chkdsk

I mispelled it.   start>run>cmd> chkdsk /f   note space after chkdsk   after doing it this way do you still get the error?

Thanks. When I do that I get the message 'ckdsk' is not recognized as a internal or external command, operable program og batch file.

...and this is a known issue to Dell and Microsoft; each basically say it is the other's problem.   There are some workarounds online, none of which worked for me, but you might try them.  See this thread:  http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=sw_winxp&thread.id=244121   Dell support has said to me that the only way to solve this problem is to do a complete re-install using the OS disk that came with the computer (which would be different than the OS that shipped with the computer).  While that is their 'solution' to too many problems, I think they are right this time.  IMO, they SHOULD ship me the right disks for the OS that my machine shipped with, but they don't see things my way.    Good luck.      JDE

tomron, thanks. That worked but I still get the error message with sfc /scannow. I find that this is a known problem but none of the solutions recommended help, except I have not tried a complete OS reinstall.

FYI. I received this email friom Dell -   'I have set up a dispatch for an updated Windows XPMCE disc. I believe what is happening here is the system file checker is attempting to modify a file which was installed with the Service Pack2 update, but your original installation disk was created before Service Pack2 and as such is unable to find the correct file. You should receive the replacement disc within two to three days.'

I agree.  I have the correct MCE disk, but sfc calls for the 'Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD' as the poster indicated in their original post.   JDE

bobh621: Did you get a chance to try the fix on the link I posted? I'm not confident a replacement XP MCE disk is going to resolve this problem. Keep us posted.

DELL-Chris B, no I have not tried your suggestion yet. Printed out a hard copy and will try it if the replacement CD does not help. Thanks for your help.

DELL Chris B. You are correct the replacement CD is the same version I have.   I modified the Source Path in the registry and tried -   C:\ C:\i386 C:\i386\CMPNTS\MEDIACTR   None of these solved the problem. Any other suggestions?
