The easiet way to do this is to get a router that your ISP supports, usually a PPPoE protocol needed for DSL.  Linksys makes a fine one.

Both desktops would connect to the router via hard wired or wirless depending on the model of the router and both would need either network cards wor wirless network card.  To setup the rouer, one machine must be hard wired to the router.

Here is a good resource:

Thanks for the reply but that's not my issue. I have my windows XP set up for different user accounts. So we have to log on to the same computer but we have our own desktops. What I mean by our own desktops is having our own wallpaper, desktop icon, My documents and other files. It's like haveing two computers in one. When I log on to my "desktop" I can connect with no problem but when I log onto my wife's "desktop" the computer won't connect (the same computer) Hope I've clarified this.

Ben.

Well I found the problem and I decided to post it in case anyone does a search and finds this thread.

On my wife's desktop I opened IE clicked TOOLS, INERNET OPTIOINS then the CONNECTIONS tab, then clicked LAN SETTINGS

I had to uncheck the box for:  Use a proxy server for your LAN.

Yeah I feel like a maroon!
